The Reviews for A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) 1080p

Will stand the test of timeReviewed byCuriosityKilledShawnVote: 7/10

Even though this TV is now almost 40 years old, it has surely stood the test of time and is still relevant today. Basically, Charlie Brown is upset that Xmas has become too commercialised. He wants to enjoy it but can't because of the shallow, money-grabbing opportunity he sees all around him.

The gang try to cheer him up by letting them direct their Xmas play. He finds it a major stain at first but soon finds it easy being an artistic tyrant. But they need an Xmas tree and the only one Charlie can afford is practically a twig. It needs a lot of love, which the gang sure do give it.

Also this TV special also features something damn rare in Xmas movies these days; an actual dedication to Jesus. Now, I am not a puritan Christian but there are sooooo many movies that try to find the TRUE meaning of Xmas but none ever mention the birth of Jesus. Weird eh? Definitely one of the better Xmas specials and miles better than Mr Magoo's Xmas Carol or Denver the Last Dinosaur Saves Santa.

Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!Reviewed byHey_SwedenVote: 10/10

The Yuletide season really wouldn't be complete without viewings of this heartwarming, classic animated special, featuring all of the beloved characters, and solidly combining sentiment and humour into a memorable whole.

Poor old Charlie Brown, who as is said can always be counted upon to turn something happy into a problem, is upset at Christmas time. He's seen his kid sister Sally fixate on gift getting and his dog Snoopy participating in a Christmas decorating contest. Despondent over this focus on the commercialization of the holiday, he yearns to find the deeper meaning of it all, eventually given to him by Linus. Lucy gives him an assist by involving him in the production of the school play; soon, he's assigned the task of procuring the right Christmas tree for the occasion.

The characters are all as engaging and funny as they've ever been, especially Snoopy - when he mimics Lucy as she harangues the others, or dances to Schroeders' piano music (and then skulks away, embarrassed), or makes it quite clear that he wants to stop rehearsals for lunch, he's a riot. Lucy has her moments, too, such as when *she* states what she'd really like for Christmas or when she delights in Charlie Browns' payment for her psychiatric services.

It is a rather sweet and touching sequence when the gang gives that little tree its complete makeover, and bursts into song, ending everything on a true upbeat feel. Vince Guaraldis' compositions remain catchy, including "Christmastime is Here" and the instantly recognizable "Linus and Lucy". Linus' climactic monologue is still a true highlight.

This special may now be 50 years old, and todays' generation may be much more conditioned to CGI, but this viewer still appreciates the old days of hand drawn animation. There really is something endearing about this classic, simple style; animation today, while admittedly impressive, can come off as a little *too* slick. And the themes in this special remain resonant and the presentation sweet and charming.

I, like so many other fans, grew up with the strip and the specials, and it's absolutely no surprise that watching them would still be a tradition for decades.

10 out of 10.

Completely IrresistibleReviewed bystevecliffVote: 10/10

How can you not love it? I'm a 46-year-old Jewish agnostic, and this still makes me laugh and brings a tear to my eye after dozens of viewings; and I don't think it's just nostalgia. I think if you can't enjoy this, you might as well just pack it in. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without this and the ORIGINAL Grinch. Too bad the follow-ups, with the exception of course of It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, have never matched its humor, charm and heart. Favorite funny line? Lucy complains about always getting toys and bikes and clothes. "What do you want?" Charlie Brown asks. "REAL ESTATE!" Favorite touching moment? The transformation of the scrawny tree into a beautiful one of course.
