How can this movie be rated 7.6 overall when most of the reviewers hated it? I thought it was irritating and boring. A bunch of shallow stupid mega-rich people with nothing interesting to say drinking champagne in gigantic houses and slithering around in slinky designer clothes. And really, how did her mother never know her boyfriend's family was that famous and rich after she dated him for a year and they were so 'close'? Predicable ending. Cute lead actress who is supposedly a brilliant professor but she hardly showed her brains to say anything clever during this movie. Jokes and gags fell flat. How has this stupid movie been so hyped up?

This film missed the boat by over ten years. Gold diggers after material Goods To Achieve Status are Passe, unhip And Uncool. The World is awake to the billions living in poverty, billions who are hungry and marrying rich is so 2001.
People who are still worried about driving fatter and fatter cars and being on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, etc are seen as has-beens who believe they have status but are only as hip as MySpace.
Unfortunately this film has done its target market analysis and is feeding the go of those with inferiority complex, material hunger and johnny-come-lately complex and mentality. It includes rich 'Asian', promotes status of those who have money or really really want it (as if) and of course according to the target market analysis and marketing the Asian is beautiful, the Asian is a professor, the Asian is fashionable, etc. all to sell tickets.Well, all these things are ugly and shallow. Beauty and wealth come from within and demonstrated in personality and kindness. MOVIEFAIL
This is such a shallow movie adapted from a lousy shallow novel. I gave it a shot but then wasted a short time of my life to find out its hollowshallowness. My curiosity came from my wife when she read this novel, but she couldn't stop complaining and cursing about its shallowness and poor writing of its author. Even though she disliked or more precisely speaking, hated it very much, but since she got a very stubborn habit, i.e., once she decided to pick up a book to read, no matter how bad it is, she'd finish it, even it might cause pain and annoyance. I overheard her curses and complaints so often during reading this novel which was given to her as a gift. But once she finally finished, she threw it into the garbage can right away. Well, out of curiosity, I sneakily picked it out and perused it quickly. I immediately found out that her complaints and curses were true, I couldn't read it after 10 pages because the writing was just so poor to read. I just couldn't believe it could be published, and then Jesus crying on a crutch, it even adapted into a screenplay and became a blockbuster box office phenom!!!
Like what I've mentioned as above, I tried to watch the film but just couldn't finish it; it's as bad as the novel itself. What's wrong America?! How could it possible a lousy novel would be able to attract a bunch of movie makers to purchase its movie right and made it into a movie and became so hot as the No.1 Box Office and raking so much money from the movie goers? There's only one truth about this novel and the movie: Some Asians in Singapore or especially in China are indeed outrageously filthy rich. The so-called American middle class if compare to those rich people in Asia, would suddenly turned into a homeless-like laughable beggars. Those Asians on the other hand are also trying so hard to look like and live like the Westerners, if exactly speaking, the Americans. But these filthy rich Asians could only imitate the outlook or the outside of the Westerners, and they only inevitably but wrongfully grabbed the Materialism and nothing more.
The novel that was disposed by my wife was now as part of the raised base of several books I used to make my monitor a bit higher than my laptop and at least it serves some practical purpose for a Crazy Poor Asian American. I rest my case.
