The Reviews for Overboard (2018) 720p

Consistently amusingReviewed byGino CoxVote: 8/10

Overboard (2018), starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez, is frequently funny, which is more than can be said for many comedies. I never saw the original, with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, so can only judge the remake on its own merits. The film benefits from a tightly-woven plot and three-dimensional characters with multifaceted relationships in the supporting roles. Every minor detail seems carefully crafted to support the plot, with very little wasted motion. On the downside, it is a little formulaic, often predictable and a bit schmaltzy. However, it's executed with sufficient panache, that even the plot developments that one fully expects are enjoyable. While the broad brushstrokes are often predictable, the film offers some subtle nuances which are unexpected.

If the protagonist is the character who undergoes the greatest change and with whom the audience most closely identifies, then Derbez's Leonardo is arguably the protagonist, rather than top-billed Anna Faris's Kate. Leonardo is a multi-billionaire's wastrel son who has never grown up or accepted responsibility. He summarily fires a chef, whose food is boring and refuses to pay a carpet cleaner who refuses to kowtow to his whims. Yet, despite his egocentricity, he has a heart of gold, an infectious joie de vivre and the integrity to say exactly what he thinks. We want Leonardo to grow up and become a mature adult. We don't want Kate to imprison him forever. Eugenio Derbez, of How to Be a Latin Lover, largely carries the film and performs with enough energy and conviction to make situations that might seem ridiculous seem believable. Anna Faris's role seems somewhat hampered, first, by the current imperative in films to make characters, particularly female leads, politically correct, and second, by an apparent desire to maintain a PG-13 rating for what is essentially a film about a vengeful woman who engages in a massive conspiracy to commit human trafficking and slavery. Consequently, Faris's Kate spends a fair amount of screen time cramming for a nursing exam, socializing with immigrants, parenting, working multiple jobs to support her family, and agonizing over the moral implications of her actions - none of which is particularly funny. While the movie was consistently amusing, they could have pushed the envelope much further, but then, I quite enjoyed the edgy humor in Movie 43, one of the few films which I've seen with Anna Faris.

Several supporting characters shine, including John Hannah, Mel Rodriguez, Fernando Luján and Jesús Ochoa. In the interest of diversity, they also squeeze in a homosexual male and a cringeworthy transsexual. Production values are solid, with a refreshing lack of jiggly-cam shots

The shills have arrived!Reviewed bynemman63Vote: 1/10

I see the shills have arrived en masse with their 10/10 and one or two sentence reviews, to try to pull this dreck up from the murky depths where it rightfully belongs. This movie is horrible. Possibly the worst remake of a fine classic movie that I have ever seen.Poor casting, acting, no chemistry, the original stripped of all its charm and replaced with mean spiritedness and spite.

Save your money and watch the original.

A failure from every possible angleReviewed bytexasboyyVote: 2/10

What happens when you take a classic beloved comedy, switch the gender roles to jump on the P.C. bandwagon, give it to two unqualified directors with no experience in feature films, cast two actors with less chemistry than a frog and an old shoe, put the entire plot in the trailer, and then release it to theaters?

You get an entire world of people, especially fans of the original, wondering why the studio even bothered.

I have no problem with remakes as long as they're enjoyable, but this one isn't. Not even a little. If you're going to remake a film, have a reason for remaking it. Add something new to it. And switching gender roles isn't "new." Hasn't been for a long time.

This is a truly weak effort every step of the way, even from the normally enjoyable Farris who sleepwalks through every scene. Guess she had some extra time to kill between seasons of her sitcom Mom, or maybe she just needed the cash to supliment the millions she probably got from divorcing Chris Pratt. Whatever the reason, she needs to fire her agent.

Look, if you must see this, wait until it's on cable, but only if there's nothing else on the other 2,000 channels.
