The Reviews for The Return of Frank James (1940) 720p

good follow up to Jesse JamesReviewed bykyle_furrVote: 7/10

The first western directed by Fritz Lang and it wouldn't be his last. Henry Fonda returns as Frank James and so do several other cast members like John Carradine and Henry Hull. There is a new cast member played by Jackie Cooper who is playing Jesse James grown up kid. This one starts out with Frank wanting to give up bank robbing until he hears about Jesse getting killed and then going after the Ford brothers who killed him. The Ford brothers, by the way, are putting on a show about how they killed Jesse.

Frank doesn't have that much money so he decides to rob a bank and a man is killed by the posse but they think Frank did it. There's more to the plot by you can find that out for yourself. This is Gene Tierney's first film and in this movie Frank had to avenge Jesse's murder without actually killing anyone himself, do to the strictures of the censors.

Frank James (Henry Fonda) sets out to revenge his brother Jesse's death by the murderer Bob Ford(John Carradine) after Ford is pardoned for the murder.Reviewed byclck2001Vote: 10/10

I do not know if this is true or not, but I heard from someone that in order to make Grapes of Wrath, which he really wanted to do, Fonda had to make Jesse James, which he did'nt really want to do, because they were on the same contract, and any sequels or prequels to that. But it does'nt really matter if Fonda did not want to do Jesse James or Return of Frank James, because he has such a great acting ability, which he displays on screen. I think this one is superior to Jesse James for many reasons, all of which are hard to explain. Cooper turns in a worthy role as Frank's sidekick, Clem. But don't you think that the African-American servant is kind of silly? Some people say that Carradine is not a good villain, but when that happens, just refer to McCoy and Co. to fill in that role. I love Henry Hull's character, especially his rantings and ravings in the courthouse, and also his rantings and ravings while he paces up and down the floor of his newspaper office. There isn't very many people that he does not think should be taken out and shot down like a dog, is there?

Forsakes the potential to be darker and more interesting than it was and just delivers what the genre demandsReviewed bybob the mooVote: 7/10

When his brother Jesse is shot in the back, Frank James decides to keep his anonymity and allow justice to be done by the courts. The law find the two men guilty of murder, regardless of what the victim had done, but thirty minutes later and the Governor has pardoned them. Keen to avenge his brother's wrongful murder, Frank leaves his remote farm and heads out after the killers. Tangling with the law early on, he can no longer rely on the rumour that he has been shot dead himself and finds himself a prey while at the same time being a hunter.

I was looking forward to this film because the themes of revenge, violence and their affects are often ideas that Fritz Lang has managed to do interesting work with. So regardless of the western setting and the colourful Technicolor presentation, I decided to give this a go. The promise is there early on and, as Frank starts to give up his quiet life to pick his guns up again, the film seems to chicken out of looking at his dark side at all. This means that the film isn't as interesting as I hoped it would be but doesn't mean that it isn't a solid western, because it is. It is a bit slower than many genre fans will be looking for but it does the basics well enough and I enjoyed the mix of dramatic and the amusing even if it doesn't really amount to that much.

Lang's direction is good although it is only in the odd scene where I felt he was doing something interesting (the scene in the barn near the end is the best one ? all shadow and atmosphere). The cast are solid enough to make the material work. Fonda has the ability to go darker as an actor but he doesn't here for whatever reason. His performance suits the matinée western of the film but doesn't do anything more interesting than that. Tierney is pretty and has some chemistry with Fonda but the story could have done without her (she was meant to be a love interest but it was dropped as an idea). Support from Cooper, Hull, Carradine and others is roundly good, with everyone delivering the goods on the genre level this was working at.

Overall then an entertaining enough western that will probably satisfy genre fans. However with an actor and director that are given an interesting theme to work with, this should have been much better than it was and I must confess that I was a bit disappointed. Should work for a boring afternoon's viewing though.
